This was by far the best weekend in some time in this little world of mine. Why, well because when a person gets out of bed at 8am instead of 4pm on a Saturday, "a person" can get a lot more done.
Especially when you do not have a vomit inducing headache.
Another phenomenal weekend at Tucker's. Phenom because the people of down town, young and old, the music, the DJs (Gibby, JJ Lopez, Scuba Gooding Sr. first and foremost) AND ownership focused on the customer and created an enclosed out door patio. Genius.)
More to come...I just wanted to say thank you because this would not be possible without the movers and shakers of down town and I do not mean the folks who commute in from 1604 to their insular office gigs. Tucker's has been funky since 1948 and I hope we can only build on that tradition, keeping the dance floor rockin'.
Even more amazing is what took place with San Anto Cultural Arts. It's more than activism, it's pride and love for your community. This was my first experience with the organization so I'll try not want to make too many sweeping generalizations.
From what I observed and in my humblest opinion, San Anto CA is impacting the same neighborhoods "they" the board members and staff grew up in, in a positive way - giving kids an outlet for expression and a new perspective on everyday thoughts and ideas. Maybe not everyone who is part of San Anto CA grew up on the Westside, but their love for the children of the Westside made it seem so.
They're nurturing/cultivating new artists and giving children a voice and soapbox they can write or draw on or... photograph. El Placazzo and Mural Initiatives grab the attention of children.
I'm a believer in the power of organized sports for children, but maybe being on the school football team isn't for everyone. And the stigmatism of being part of a school band may not be for your child or your neighbors children. Think.
Check out the video, sorry it's dated.
I'm very proud that there is a group of individuals in SA, around my age, who are not blinded by their own personal gains. At times, I'm just as guilty....
The most recent accomplishment of San Anto was the mural blessing and more the move to 2120 El Paso.
I was also very happy to see this story in not only the SA Current and Express News, but also in the SA Business Journal (I couldn't find the damn web link)!
This is the support grass-rooted community efforts need!
RANT TANGENT: I am tired of people complaining about San Antonio. Do something. If it's lame, change it. Build something, inspire someone or shut up and move.
I digress....
I can not say enough about San Anto Cultural Arts, but I look forward to learning more.
I really have to keep up with this blog. There is alot more that has happened since I checked in last.
The Monterey - go and try it.
Diego Bernal, read up on him. I have to find out a bit more about his stances on issues and blah blah, but he's running for District 1 and ANOTHER Jefferson H.S. graduate. Yes, just like our Mayor, my mother and my sister.
I graduated from Mac Arthur and I would not trade anything to change the great times I had and life long friends, brother and sisters I made growing up. BUT, but, where are the graduates of Churchill and MacArthur? What are the graduates of Regan going to do for San Antonio.
Maybe they're out there and I do not know.
Furthermore (sounds official)... how about focusing an add campaign for the Spurs on SAN ANTONIO.
"Not just the Spurs, your SAN ANTONIO Spurs!"
We will fill empty seats to every game and give a shot of pride to the folks of River/Military/Education/Alamo - CITY. Whatever.....
It's San Antonio, our city takes care of our needs, we need to give back.
NY resolution, pay more attention to what's happening in the heart of the city and do what I can to help. "New" New Year's resolution - wake up Saturday mornings ready to impact my little piece of the world, indulge in everything great about San Antonio and then build on that greatness.

The secret? Stage, sound, music and no legal bs.
Damn. It's a new year and we haven't spoke once.
A lot going on but not Marfa Film Festival. This was Robin Lambaria's brain child, a smart woman with passion and vision. MFF was a great idea for 3 years running, growing and because of "legal issues", it will not take place this year. I wish I had more details. I hope my new friend Enrique Lopetegui Caprario picks up the story.
What's happened since we last spoke? T-Bird and the Breaks at Stubbs, bomb show, great times and wonderful friends. Not so impressed with inside sound or stage at Stubbs - but I was informed it is notoriously bad sound. I'm in love with all 3 back up singers - I wonder if they have a group stage name.....or are they the Breaks in T-Bird and the Breaks.....some one help me out.....maybe they're the Bird....
My point about the stage and sound is that if your bar spends money on anything, invest in a stage and sound. You'll book more acts, better acts. You can charge cover, and you can host special events.
With the closing of Scoutbar (pay your taxes), there is a need for a venue with not only decent sound and stage but compliment that with giving a shit with what your place looks like.
So I'm having a stage built and it will be for rent, I'll have more shameless plugs as it comes closer to completion.
Speaking of crappy places with decent sound;)
Steve Nice is bringing TB & tB to Limelight on Friday February 25th. Why Limelight, I don't know. I can bitch about how horrible of a venue I think that is but the management listens to the right people and are not afraid to take chances...and I have a good time when I go there so either I buy a spot on St. Mary's (which is not happening yet because I'm still paying 09 taxes) or I shut up about "the Limer" or "Lamelight" as it's affectionately called.
Good meeting with JC from Industry. Launching in SA February 3, 4 and 5. Pre-party at Revolution Room on the 3rd, Party Party at Revolution Room Basement on the 4th and Post Party at OFS 3 Year Anniversary Party at Rebar. - mostly merch but design house as well. Be on the look our for their ESTABLISHMENT clothing line and STAB ME RECORDINGS record label. From what it sounds like they are going to pioneer and new industry for record labels. They have a powerful semi-conglomerate in the making: owning the t-shirt presses to designing the clothes and packaging them with limited edition wax. Bravo.
Tomorrow is the First Friday of the month and of the year. The party is going down at Tucker's Kozy Korner with Soul Spot DJs JJ Lopez and Scuba Gooding Sr.
First Friday itself has become a marquee night for Southtown in San Antonio. Tucker's Kozy Korner has been at the corner of E. Houston and Cherry St. since 1948; mix in a bit of Cajun food, soul power and "the best dancers in SA." You are in for a funky treat my friend. Shake somethin'.
This month:
1/15 Super Soul Shakedown with Brownout at Sam's Burger Joint
1/16 Chicken George at Rev with DJ GIBB
1/17 In Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Peterson Brother's Band, Soul Grammar & JJ Lopez at Tucker's
Our city, San Antonio, hosts the largest MLK march in the world. March then come dance!
1/18 Mariangela Vacatello at UTSA Recital Hall
1/26 Vince Gill at Laurie Auditorium
1/29 Artslam 5 Year Anniversary at White Rabbit
